Three Main ISO Management Systems
The three main management systems that many organizations implement are: quality (ISO 9001), environment (ISO 14001), and health and safety (OHSAS 18001), as they apply to all organizations. As outlined in Figure 11.3, there are many other management systems, such as energy (ISO 50001), which could, as an example, be integrated with the environment (ISO 14001) standard. The basis for many other industry standards, such as food safety (ISO 22000), is the ISO 9001. All management system standards utilize the ISO 19011 Guideline for auditing.
The quality management system (QM) ISO 9001's focus is on ensuring “customer satisfaction,” providing products or services that consistently meet customer and applicable legal requirements. Customers know that when you have a QMS in place your organization has
identified its requirements, as well as legal needs, and has a structure in place to manage and control the quality of the product/service it will deliver.
Global Registration Results
ISO contracts out a survey, which outlines the previous year's management system registrations around the world.
The majority of the registrations in 2012 were: Europe at 43.1 percent and Asia at 43.1 percent, with only 3.5 percent in North America. Central and South America had 4.7 percent.
North America is the lowest. Why is this happening? What does North America have to learn from this? Are we losing our business opportunities? Organizations use the ISO certification system for competitive advantage showing quality performance to their customers, whether they have it in place or not. Has your government supported business to put in structures like China and India have, providing tax incentive programs?
Supply-chain risk will be crucial for global business. Information on suppliers may be difficult to attain, however when you have an ISO 9001 certification in place, it will show that you as a supplier can provide quality products/service with confidence, mitigate risk, and build lasting business partnerships. The certification assists in identifying high-quality suppliers and low-quality ones in the global marketplace.
