1 Interdisciplinary research conducted in the 1990s, designated as “The decade of brain” by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Library of Congress, has shaped ongoing efforts to deepen our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying mental processes. At the time of writing scientists are carrying out a collaborative effort known as the Human Connectome Project, modeled after the Human Genome Project, conceived by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation in the United States. Researchers seek to record the activity of every neuron in real time, linking the physical processes of the brain to the mental processes of the mind.
