Future directions for EI development in Croatia

There is still a growing interest for research in the field of El in Croatia as it applies to various areas such as national and private companies who consider “soft skills” as important for their employees as well as school counselors and social work professionals looking for emotional competencies programs. Sport is another area that benefits from El competence and knowledge programs as El can be included as a part of athletes’ training, especially during competition preparations, and can be integrated in recreational activities for the younger population. In the last few years Croatia has been preparing the national school curriculum reform, with one of its goals pertaining to the development of emotional and social competence in primary and secondary school students.

In the El field, studies on measurement invariance are still at an early stage and the problems are just starting to be addressed (Ekermans, Saklofske, Austin, & Stough, 2011; Parker et al., 2005). Nevertheless, the importance of examining the validity of El measures and considering the influence from culture and social standards is extremely important. In their review of the cross-cultural implications of measuring emotional and social intelligence competencies, Emmerling and Boyatzis (2012) conclude that there may be significant cultural variability in particular skills associated with the main abilities from El models. Further development of El measures regarding cultural factors (Taksic, Mohoric, & Holmstrom, 2018), will be the focus of studies in Croatia for years to come.
