Social attitudes

Education was positively associated with feeling threatened by Hollywood, negatively associated with support for abortion, and not associated with acceptance of homosexuality (Table 17.9). For the majority of Americans, education increases tolerance, but for Anglo Evangelicals it increased their resistance to “Hollywood values” and abortion. The lack of association between advanced education and acceptance of homosexuality may simply be a reflection of a larger trend in American society.

Geography was inconsistently associated with social attitudes. Anglo Evangelicals in most regions were more accepting of homosexuality than Southern Evangelicals, with the exception of the Central Valley, the Bay Area, and “Other NorCai.” Anglo Evangelicals in the Central Valley were as opposed to accepting homosexuality as Southerners; this would be consistent with Berger, since Evangelical Christianity predominates in both geographies. Anglo Evangelical opposition to homosexuality in the Bay Area and “Other NorCai,” on the other hand, is consistent with Warner’s “New Paradigm” in that they are apparently doubling down on this belief in these two liberal environments. Acceptance of homosexuality increased with each younger cohort, so that Millennials were 2.6 times as likely as the Silent Generation to be tolerant and Boomers only 1.5 times as likely. Again, this may be an indication of a sea change in American society as a whole that has influenced Anglo Evangelicals.
