Drugs Immediately after Birth

The injection of vitamin K a few minutes after birth belongs to the protocol of many hospitals.

The obvious fact must be considered that the deficiency of that vitamin is rare, that it is only possible to find it in cases of particular problems related to blood clotting and, therefore, in the overwhelming majority of cases that administration is completely pointless.

The lack of vitamin K can occur in the first 24 hours of life and almost exclusively in children born to mothers who take drugs which inhibit the production of vitamin K: anti-convulsants like carbamazepine, phenytoin and barbiturates; some antibiotics; and vitamin K antagonists like coumarin and warfarin, drugs whose administration to young and active people such as, among others, pregnant women should be avoided as far as possible. Any pharmacologist knows that that type of problem is not preventable with the administration of vitamin K to the newborn, but only by supplementing that vitamin to the mother in the days preceding the birth.

Much less severe forms related to the deficiency of that vitamin can occur after a few weeks or between two weeks and six months in very serious form in babies with biliary tract problems. Cases like these are rare indeed, and it is hard to presume that a single dose of vitamin administered a few minutes after birth can retain its activity after months.

One might think that, even if it is of at least little use, that injection does not cause problems. Analysing the drug, however, we found the presence of pollutants in the form of solid inorganic particles, and since the administration takes place in subjects which weigh very little, that dose represents a high quantity in terms of proportion (Fig. 7.4).

Apart from any discussion about the usefulness of this administration done without carrying out any investigation showing a deficiency of that vitamin, it is worth noting the presence of polluting particles as we found in a vial of the drug (Konakion by Roche). In addition to iron-based particles, including steel ones, particles with a composition of calcium, silicon and magnesium have been found, which, without being able to be certain since it is not possible to inspect the production laboratory, appear to be common environmental dust.

A simple balance between the actually achievable benefit and the potential risk run would recommend avoiding that injection unless there is a proven indication.

In a breastfeeding woman, the particles inhaled, ingested or anyway administered can enter the lactiferous ducts and consequently end up in breast milk and be ingested by the baby. Said in parentheses, it may be interesting to investigate whether those undue presences may have any function in inducing breast cancer.

In many countries, with significant mutual differences, by law or by habit or because of personal convictions, a different number and variety of vaccines are administered to newborns. It is not our intention to debate here the possibility of immunising a newborn baby. We only want to underline how a newborn’s microbiota is not able to easily tolerate those drugs containing, in addition to the active principle and as already mentioned, a long series of substances not always indicated in full by the manufacturer and not always safe (antibiotics, formaldehyde, preservatives, emulsifying agents, human and animal DNA, aluminium, etc.) and a far from indifferent quantity of pollutants. It is necessary to add that different substances (e.g. mercury) can be present in concentrations below the legal limits (legal and biological are different concepts) and, therefore, are not reported as if they were not existent. In the event of an allergy, however, even a minimal amount of substance can be harmful, even to the point of death (see, for example, the very small amount of poison injected by a bee sting in allergic adults). It is clear that it is not possible to know whether a child born a few weeks ago is allergic to certain substances, nor moreover, are checks carried out.

As a matter of fact, vaccinations to children are practiced blindly without any prior control regarding the subject’s ability to tolerate substances both individually and mixed together. We also add that, in our personal experience, almost every day we come across a worrying and increasing number of children clearly damaged by vaccines. These are perfectly healthy and active children who, in the space of a few days or, sometimes, a few hours from the moment of vaccination, lose a large part of their intellectual faculties and of their ability to react to external stimuli. We believe that the stubborn attempt to deny very evident facts is not only contrary to science but to morality itself.

Furthermore, children are a favourite target of drug makers. The alarming abuse of psychotropic drugs which started in the United States is taking hold all over the world. Regardless of the inevitable toxicity of these drugs and their long-term consequences, the question we ask ourselves is whether psychotropic drugs are aimed at an eventual recovery or are not, rather, a kind of straitjacket made for children because they do not cause too much trouble. And we also wonder if those who are treated pharmacologically are always really pathologies.

Now, there are antibiotics liberally administered for small affections, not infrequently combined with immuno-suppressants such as glucocorticoid drugs (e.g. dexamethasone and prednisolone) and even prescribed for viral diseases against which, obviously, antibiotics have no activity. Needless to say, these abuses destroy the microbiota and induce antibiotic resistance which could become dangerous if those antibiotics become truly indispensable.

But the attacks they suffer from very common medicaments often obtainable without a prescription are much more usual.

An example of a drug used with enormous frequency and beyond reason is paracetamol (see also Chapter 5), an active ingredient found in hundreds of different pharmaceutical forms and present in almost all homes (Fig. 7.5). What is constantly ignored is that a temperature rise is the body’s first and most effective form of defense against attacks by pathogens. A higher-than-normal temperature favours the actions of the immune system and, at the same time, weakens the viruses and bacteria which are attacking. So, lowering the temperature promotes disease. A further abuse of this drug is the administration which is sometimes prescribed before the injection of a vaccine in order to avoid that the febrile reaction is detectable [1]. But, on top of all that, even those drugs can be polluted.

Finally, the food which is given to children can be polluted exactly like what any adult eats (Fig. 7.6). In the course of our research we have analysed some samples of industrial food produced exclusively for children, even when they are in their weaning phase, finding the presence of polluting particles (see Chapter 5).

In this, as in almost all cases, it seems that nobody, laws and rules in the first place, deals with and worries about those presences. Thus, no adequate checks are made, and in general perception, it is as if the fact did not exist at all.

Regardless of any moral consideration, today’s children are destined to be the men of tomorrow. It is clear that if the world is inhabited by a generation of sick people, the future will not be particularly bright.
