Concluding Thoughts

What we are proposing in this anti-racist policy decision-making protocol is just one of the many responses to a color-evasive, market-driven educational policy context. However, to truly achieve racial equality in education, other social institutions outside of education must also radically restructure and work toward operating with a truly democratic mindset. Education has always been thought of as the answer to all of society’s ills because it is one of the only socialized institutions still in existence. Yet our education system cannot counteract rising income inequality or residential segregation in a political context that has retreated from desegregation or health care access and affordability—all of which are deeply intertwined with race and have a direct impact on education. Ajust and anti-racist society cannot exist without an awareness of racism and a commitment to and investment in anti-racism by institutions and individuals alike. It is our hope that our book will help educational leaders acknowledge how they may contribute to the racial inequities that are a consequence of neoliberal ideologies in the larger societal context and then act to dismantle them in their school communities and beyond.
