Els Dumortier (1972) holds a master’s degree in law (1995, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and in criminology (1997, VUB). She is a fulltime professor and teaches three bachelor courses (youth justice law, law and criminology and introduction to criminological research methods) and one master course (youth criminology) at the Faculty of Law and Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). She is a member of the European Council for Juvenile Justice and a founding member of the (Flemish) Children’s Rights Knowledge Centre in Belgium.

Her research specifically focuses on questions concerning youth justice (practices) and children’s rights both in contemporary times and in the past (twentieth century). She participates in several national and international scientific networks in the domain of youth justice (Dutch, English and French speaking), both contemporary focussed and historical. International publications include Resisting punitiveness in Europe?: welfare, human rights and democracy (with Sonja Snacken).

Jenneke Christiaens is a fulltime professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. She is a member of the Criminology department and at the present chair of CRiS—Crime and Society research group. Between 2002 and 2008 she was a professor at the University of Genth in the Dept. of Criminology and Penal Law. Jenneke Christiaens has a master degree in educational as well as criminological sciences, and obtained her Ph.D. in criminology in 1998 with a criminological-historical study on the birth of the Belgian juvenile justice system. She teaches introduction to criminology (1st Bachelor), juvenile justice and youth criminology (3rd bachelor), and the master courses Youth criminology and Crime and the city. Her research interests concern juvenile justice practices, youth delinquency as well as (youth) crime, public space and the city.

Current research focuses on judicial trajectories of youngsters into adulthood, desistance and impact of judicial intervention from a life history perspective; detention of young people; gendered youth justice practices; judging juveniles in court; youngsters, their use(s) of public space and criminalisation.

An Nuytiens is a postdoctoral researcher and a research professor at the Crime and Society research group (CriS) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). She conducted studies on restorative youth justice, transfer of juvenile offenders to Adult Court and youth offenders’ profiles and delinquent pathways. In recent years her research interests are in the area of female offenders. Her work currently focuses on life histories and criminal careers of female prisoners, delinquent pathways of girls in the juvenile justice system, gendered pathways to crime and prison, motherhood in prison and Romani girls in the Youth Court.
