Mobile social networks (MSNs) have become new network paradigms which combine mobile networks and social services based on the social relations among users. As both the population of users and the scale of networks are increasing, modeling and optimization for MSNs bring critical issues to satisfy the new demands of quality of experience (QoE) from users. In this chapter, we first provide an overview of MSNs. Then, we highlight the latest research directions related to the modeling and optimization for MSNs. Finally, the aim of the monograph is provided.

Overview of MSNs

Mobile Social Networks

Nowadays, users have been more disposed to obtain content by mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets instead of the existing desktop computers. It has been reported that the number of mobile devices used by users has been more than the population in the world since 2014. As more and more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, various mobile social networks emerge to provide users with the satisfied network connections and social services. Some emerging social network applications, such as Facebook, Twitter in the North America and Wechat, SinaBlog in China, etc., have been designed and widely used in daily life.

In MSNs, different users may have different social activity based on his social characteristics and the relationship between other users. A group of users are linked up by one or multiple interdependent relationships. These interdependent relationships can be the physical contacts, common interests, financial trading activities, or organizational involvement [1]. Users with one or multiple interdependent relationships can form a community to contact with others through mobile devices [2].

The MSNs provide users with the platform to carry out social activities instead of using the traditional computer. The mobility of social users makes the network services such as content exchange, sharing and transmission distinct from other conventional networks. The MSNs can be looked as an integrated paradigm of social networks and mobile communication networks, as shown in Fig. 1.1. During the delivery of service in MSNs, the QoE needs to be guaranteed with the consideration of optimization of parameters status such as the mobility, bandwidth and delay.
