The University of Iowa Children’s Environmental Airway Disease Center conducts research on the etiology and pathogenesis of airway disease in children from rural communities. The research indicates that the incidence and severity of asthma in rural children is similar to that in urban children. Apparently viral infections increased sensitivity to environmental exposures. The products of bacteria and fungi are frequently found in the rural environment and apparently may act as triggers for asthma.
