Home Education Field-Based Learning in Family Life Education: Facilitating High-Impact Experiences in Undergraduate Family Science Programs
Our approach to teaching students FLE methodology has changed to be more hands-on and student-led in an effort to improve their learning and abilities. Simply, we teach them to teach, practice having them teach, and then trust them to teach those who need so much of their help. Few other university programs or internship opportunities place so much responsibility in the hands of the students. This approach to teaching FLE methodology matches the aims of this work by engaging students in meaningful tasks, facilitating significant faculty-student and student-client interactions, giving students frequent performance feedback, and providing opportunities for authentic connections with faculty and diverse groups. As a result, our students leave our program not only learning about families but also ready to help them through various family life education settings.
