Presurgery Eating Goals

Presurgery eating habits need to focus on increasing intake of nutrient-dense foods that provide essential nutrients but are relatively low in calories. Nutrient-dense foods include: broccoli, spinach, carrots, baked potato, turkey, chicken, fish, plain yogurt, and fresh fruit. Low-nutrient foods include: French fries, fast-food burgers, hot dogs, fruit-flavored yogurt, sweetened sodas, and juices.

Dietary consumption goals need to focus on decreasing simple carbohydrates, limiting high-sodium foods and reducing portion sizes. A sample menu guide should be provided for presurgery and postsurgery during the nutrition assessment so the individual recognizes the total dietary modifications needed for successful weight loss. Breakfast Menu Ideas

  • 2 oz. protein or 2 scoops whey protein powder (14-15 g protein)
  • 2 scrambled eggs + 6 fresh large strawberries


2 oz. lean turkey sausage + 1/2 cup frozen mango cubes


Banana smoothie: 1/4 cup plain full fat yogurt, 2 scoops protein powder, 1/2 banana, 3 ice cubes. Blend until smooth
