Post-op Discharge Diets
Diet modifications following surgery focus on texture, consistency, and frequency of eating to insure nutritional adequacy and tolerance. Nutrition monitoring following surgery is an important factor in weight loss success and quality of life.
Diet Stages Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy
Stage 1: Days 1 and 2 Clear Liquids: sips of water hourly (1 oz./hr
day 1, 2 oz./hr day 2). Sugar-free popsicles and room temperature chicken broth may also be consumed
NO: carbonated beverages, high-sugar drinks, coffee, tea, energy drinks
Stage 2: Days 3-10 Full Liquids: Continue clear liquids (3-4
oz./hr). Advance to protein smoothies using yogurt or kefir. Sugar-free gelatin for hydration. Cream of chicken soup (no chunks).
Eat 3-5 times/day Consume 48-60 oz. fluid/day NO: carbonated beverages but “flat” diet beverages may be consumed for hydration
Stage 3: Days 11-21 Puree with high-protein smoothies: Pureed
chicken in soup, mashed tuna with mayo, cottage cheese with pureed peaches, protein smoothies, creamed soups, sugar-free popsicles
Eat 3-5 times/day. NO: fluids with meals Consume 48-60 oz. fluid/day
Stage 4: Days 22-30 Soft Cooked Foods: Scrambled egg, pureed/
chopped turkey or chicken or pork, cooked vegetables, ripe avocado, cooked or frozen pureed fruit, coffee/tea Continue protein smoothies Eat 5-6 times/day. NO: fluids with meals. Stage 5: 1-2 months Advance diet as tolerated. Cooked soft meats,
steamed vegetables, soft peeled fresh fruit (banana)
Eat 5-6 times/day. NO: fluids with meals No: bread, pasta, rice, beans/legumes, high- fructose corn sweeteners, carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages
Stage 6 Diet as tolerated with adequate protein at
each meal time
Controlled portions. Raw salads are not encouraged—they may be tolerated but provide poor-quality protein and displace other quality proteins.
A study by Arvidsson et al. indicated that patients did not need to refrain from drinking during meals the first year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) .
