Food Sensitivities

Although some physicians recognize classical food allergies commonly referred to as IgE mediated, adverse food reactions or food sensitivities of IgG response can cause numerous symptoms that bariatric surgery patients may present with. The practitioner may have problems identifying a particular food(s) that cause(s) adverse reactions but convenient diagnostic blood tests are available to aid in the diagnosis, which leads to eliminating or limiting the trigger foods from the diet.

Typical food allergens include milk, peanuts, shellfish, eggs, soy, wheat, tree nuts, and fish [20]. IgE allergic reactions are often quick to develop and can be life threatening such as acute asthma or anaphylaxis [21]. Food sensitivity or intolerance or “hidden” food allergy is often associated with GI symptoms that may not disappear as a result of bariatric surgery. The fast acting immunoglobulin E antibodies against an offending food involves an intensive fast attack whereas, food sensitivity symptoms can take hours or days to develop and can come and go in cycles or seasons [22].

A food elimination diet based on IgG antibody testing results can be an effective and targeted approach to reduce food intolerance symptoms of migraines, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), arthritis, and asthma. Diagnostic testing is available at several laboratories using a biochemical method known as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
